Pitch Up: Community Voices – Kosher Kingdom

A conversation between Jewish Museum London, & Rivki Rokach, Manager of Kosher Kingdom Supermarket

Museum: Hi Rivki, tell us about Kosher Kingdom and your role

Rivki: Kosher Kingdom is a located on Golders Green Road and is a specialised supermarket catering for our local community and beyond. It’s actually the largest kosher supermarket in Europe today.  Many of our customers fondly remember our humble beginnings as “Kosher King”, a small local grocery shop which used to be located across the road from where we are today.

Museum: How long have you been involved with Kosher Kingdom?

Rivki: I have personally been involved with Kosher Kingdom ever since its inception as “Kosher King” over 30 years ago. Years back, there was no such thing as late night shopping and the kosher choice was extremely limited! Kosher King initiated change and led the way, importing foods from the USA and beyond and offering extended opening hours.

I vividly recall the Thursday night buzz with customers flocking in to buy their Shabbat needs.  Kosher King soon became the place to meet!

Museum: What do you enjoy most about your role?

Rivki: It’s really about the role we play in the community. We’ve always taken pride in being a home-grown business, and our focus has always been to anticipate and accommodate our community’s growing needs.  This means we have actively built up a vast unparalleled choice of kosher food products and wines spanning the globe, and this allows us to cater to every shopper.

Museum: What’s the secret to Kosher Kingdom’s Success?

Rivki: We like to think outside the box and always try to keep a step ahead. The Jewish calendar being as it is with festivals throughout the year, means that we regularly have to prepare for the momentum of each one. Every Jewish festival is palpable in-store with bespoke displays of relevant novelties and of course, our fabulous offers. We are constantly innovating to bring our customers a uniquely pleasurable shopping experience.

Selecting objects

Museum: Let’s move on to the items that you’ve chosen.

Rivki: So at first I was not entirely certain what to choose. I was thinking of going for some of our more specialised items such as a Sabbath lamp or items that we bring in from abroad. However, I’ve ended up going for a range of colour coded kosher kitchen items – after all, a kosher kitchen is where all good Jewish food begins!

The “Jewish Museum” represents our faith and our heritage.  With other current exhibitors being from the “Kashrut” division, we felt it would be most appropriate and fitting to showcase some basic Milky, Meaty and Pareve kitchen utensils to get you cooking!

This range is a most useful choice. We have included wooden spoons, silicone spatulas, kitchen peelers, tea towels, and chopping boards. Each set comes in three colours; red for meat, blue for dairy, and green for pareve.

Museum: And the sweets…

Rivki: Our pick and mix (stand) section is a popular stop off point for our customers for the young and old alike! So I’ve included three jars of coloured sweets to keep with the Milky, Meaty and Parev theme!  If you haven’t yet been to Kosher Kingdom – it’s sure worth a visit.
