Object Information

Here we see Michael Lomotey sounding the shofar outside his synagogue, in front of the congregation. The shofar must be blown 100 times the month before Rosh Hashanah, to prepare all for the New Year and welcome God in this new chapter of life. Rosh Hashanah is the start of the many High Holy Days, the holiest days of the Jewish Year.  We see Michael dressed in his tallit and kippah for this sacred occasion.

Michael’s family have their roots in Ghana. Michael and his family celebrate their Judaism and Ghanaian heritage equally. There are many Jewish people around the continent of Africa, including Uganda, Ethiopia and of course – Ghana!

What does Judaism mean to you?

I once read Judaism is an attitude to reality, I concur with this summation.

All of my life is centred on this aspect of my identity which is inextricably linked to all the other parts of how I identify; the scientist, the Black man in a white world, the parent, the brother, son, spouse, climate activist, Jew.
