Object Information

In the picture are Jewish British, American, and Ghurka service men at a Passover morning service. The people are representatives of the different groups. Colonies were essential for the Allied Forces as it increased the resources available to fight. Ghurkas are Nepalese soldiers who have supported the British army for 200 years. Further, the local Pakistani community is represented by the man in the middle. The soldiers were stationed in Kesachi, Pakistan. The history of the Jewish community in Pakistan dates back to the 19th century when some Jewish people were fleeing a revolt in Persia. The community slowly grew, and over time synagogues were build. Most of them were part of the Bene Israel community observing Sephardi traditions. After 1948 many emigrated to Israel. The Bene Israel’s prayers include intercessions on behalf of Her Majesty as in several Commonwealth countries. Today there are just a few Jewish people left in Pakistan. The picture shows how Jewish people from around the world come together to celebrate Passover, and it represents the Pakistani Jewish community and that they supported the Allied Forces as a colonised country during the war.
