Object Information

In this image, asylum seekers prepare dessert for the tzedakah lunch organised by St Albans Masorti Synagogue (SAMS). The lunch took place on Mitzvah Day.

The word ‘Mitzvah’ means commandment in Hebrew. There are 613 commandments in the Torah. These are religious obligations but the word Mitzvah can also mean a good deed. Mitzvah Day takes place in November. It is a faith-led day in which social action projects are run by communities all over the UK.

The term ‘Tzedakah’ means ‘justice or righteousness’. In Judaism, supporting those in need is a duty, not a choice. Traditionally one was obliged to share 10% of their income. However, there are many different ways of performing the Mitzvah of ‘Tzedakah’, not only by providing economic support but also by volunteering.
