Object Information

This is a black and white photograph of the Mashhadi Jewish Persian community from 1928-9. This community settled in London in the 1920s and 1930s from the city of Mashhad in North East Iran.

The Jewish community in Mashhad can be traced back to 1735. In 1839, there was an attack on the Jewish community in which the community was forced convert to Islam. From that point onward, the Jewish community in Mashhad had to appear to be Muslim but they secretly observed Judaism in the privacy of their own homes. This image shows the tight-knit community gathered for prayers in a member of the community’s home in North London.
