Object Information

The Kol India is a community magazine dispersed throughout the Jewish community in India. This issue was published on Tishrei 5776 – this is the Hebrew date and correlates to September 2015. Tishrei is the first month of the Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar, and therefore operates around the moon. Unlike the secular calendar, the Hebrew calendar dates back to the date in which the world was created, according to traditional Jewish belief.

This particular issue of the Kol India Magazine celebrates Mitzvah Day. The word ‘Mitzvah’ means ‘commandment’ or simply, ‘good deed’. Therefore, ‘Mitzvah Day’ is a day in which the community is encouraged to do good deeds.

There are multiple Jewish communities in India including the Bnei Israel Community, Baghdadi Jews and the Cochin Jewish Community.
