Object Information

This is a crocheted Blue and white Kippah which was hand-made by the owner’s wife.
The owner of the Kippah is a member of St Alban’s Masorti Synagogue. The Masorti movement is a stream of Judaism which is traditional with a modern outlook. Masorti services are often egalitarian, which means women also take on the same leadership roles as men within the synagogue and in services.
A Kippah is a traditional Jewish head covering. It is worn out of respect to G-d, to show that G-d is always above. The word ‘Kippah’ is Hebrew and literally translates to mean ‘dome’ since it is dome-shaped.

This Kippah is blue and white which is a popular combination for items of Judaica and ritual clothing. The colour blue is mentioned in holy texts as a colour that was used in the tabernacle (the divine dwelling place of G-d) and on clothing worn by High Priests of the Ancient Temple. Blue represents the idea of the expansiveness of the sea and sky, as a reminder for this concept relating to G-d as well.
