Description

This commendation for bravery certificate was awarded to Rifleman Jack Ginsberg in August 1918. During the First World War, Ginsberg was in the 1st Kings Royal Rifle Corps. This unit served in many key battles. These include the First Battle of Ypres (1914), Battle of Loos (1915) and the First and Second Battle of the Somme (1916 and 1918). However this commendation was for his bravery at Gomiecourt, France. Here Ginsberg cared for wounded soldiers whilst under fire. In addition he was wounded himself and yet continued to care for other wounded soldiers.

The paper ‘Congratulates Rfn. J. Ginsberg, 1st K.R.R.C on his courage and devotion to duty near Gomiecourt on 23rd Aug 1918 when, though wounded himself, he continued to attend to the wounded in the open under heavy Machine Gun fire.’

The studio photograph of Ginsberg is from 3 February 1917. It is on a postcard and ‘from your loving parents’ is written on the reverse.
