The Promise – Holocaust Memorial Day Exhibition

28 January 2017 - 29 January 2017

Explore the story of Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss, her brother Heinz and his artwork in this moving exhibition in our Auditorium created by the South African Holocaust and Genocide Foundation.

Eva was born in Vienna in 1929. After the Nazi invasion of Austria Eva’s family fled and spent two years in hiding – Eva and her mother in one house, and her father and brother in another. During his time in hiding, Eva’s brother Heinz quelled his fears by writing poetry and painting artwork.

Finally, though, they were all betrayed and deported to Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland. Eva and her mother survived but sadly Eva’s father and brother perished just weeks before the liberation.

Eva and her mother returned to the house where Heinz and his father had hidden, for Eva had remembered that Heinz had told her he had hidden his paintings beneath the floorboards there. Sure enough, she discovered over thirty beautiful paintings.

See reproductions of some of these paintings and learn more about Eva and Heinz’s story in this special exhibition for Holocaust Memorial Day 2017.
