Jewish Museum London are delighted to join Manchester Jewish Museum in the celebration of their 150th anniversary of their Spanish and Portuguese synagogue, and will be displaying 14 Sephardi items from our collection as part of its anniversary programme

Manchester Jewish Museum first opened in 1984, housed in a Grade II listed 1874 (former) Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in Cheetham Hill, one of the most diverse areas in Manchester.

The synagogue first opened on 6th May 1874 in response to Manchester’s growing Sephardi community. Developments included a 1919 ‘succah building’ with a sliding roof, a large memorial window to commemorate former Synagogue President, Ezra Altaras, and the conversion to the Manchester Jewish Museum in the 1980s.

Following a redevelopment and extension in 2019, Manchester Jewish Museum now includes a modern gallery, vegetarian café, shop and learning studio & kitchen as well as the beautifully restored synagogue, which is now part of the permanent exhibition.
