Jews’ Hospital and Orphan Asylum Banner

In the early 19th century a hospital was opened to care for and educate poor Jewish elderly people and children. This was especially important as for poor Jewish children the only alternative was to attend free Christian schools which usually insisted on conversion. In 1836 it merged with an orphanage. In the 20th century the organisation changed its name to Norwood, and still exists today to care for vulnerable groups in the community.

Tzedakah is the Jewish obligation to give a portion of your earnings to charity, and is closely related to the Hebrew word tzedek which means justice or righteousness.
