We asked our interns to choose their favourite objects in the museum. Aneta chose a Torah mantle from the early 18th century, made by a Portuguese Jew who moved to London. Torah mantles are cloth covers used to decorate and protect Torah scrolls. The Torah is the most sacred and important object in Judaism, so protecting it from damage is very important.

During many services in synagogues the Torah will be processed and ‘undressed’ before being read publicly, and will then be ‘redressed’ and processed to be returned to the Aron HaKodesh (ark).
