Object Information

In the picture we can see a woman and children standing at a table on which are Hamentaschen and cups. Everyone is dressed up. The picture was taken at the Milton Keynes and District Reform Synagogue in the 2000s and shows a Purim celebration. Purim is about the story of Esther and Haman, and dressing up in costume is symbolic of the fact that even though God’s name is not mentioned once in the Purim story, God is still present.

The people in the picture are part of the Reform Jewish community who believe that the Torah is G-d-inspired and written by humankind. They believe Judaism must adapt to the ever changing world, and think that some commandments are not timeless. Some streams of Judaism lack representation but Judaism and how it is lived varies immensely within the Jewish spectrum. Not every Jewish person is the same, Jewish people have different beliefs and traditions.
