Object number

Object Information

The picture depicts a boy lightning a Menorah at a Hanukah party. The table is decorated with flowers. The picture was taken in Aden and it reminds us that the Jewish community is spread around the world. Hanukah is the Jewish festival of light.

The Adeni Jewish community has a long history of its own dating back at least a thousand years. Aden’s culture is different to the general Yemenite culture due to various influences of the British, Persians and Egyptians. All this is reflected in the Adeni Jewish community, which makes it unique and interesting.

Sadly, there no longer is a Jewish community in Aden due to the riots in 1947. Still, it is important to remember the community and their traditions.
