This photograph was taken on the occasion of the bar mitzvah of Mer Hay (Micheal) Issacharoff in Bukhara. He is sitting in the second row between two elderly men and wearing the bar mitzvah robe which is in the museum’s collection (C 2004.4). His mother and father, Freya and Zevulun are standing behind Micheal.

Bukhara is an ancient city in the central Asian country of Uzbekistan.  The Bukharan Jewish community was located here for hundreds of years, considered as one of the oldest etho-religious groups of Central Asia. Historically, the community spoke Bukharian, a Judeo-Persian a branch of the Persian language. The majority of this Jewish community have now migrated from Bukharan.

Bukharan Jews are part of the Mizrachi Jewish community. Mizrachi Jews are Jewish people with their roots in the Middle East.
