Animated Museum: The Brick Lane Bagel Lady
The Jewish Museum challenged young people to explore an object from our collections as part of the Animated Museum Project. Over the course of a week these teenagers produced short animated films featuring objects from the Jewish Museum and Jewish Military Museum collections.
This film tells us about the story of the well-known Brick Lane Bagel Lady, Sarah.
Sarah sold bagels outside Schewzik’s Vapour Baths in Brick Lane between the 1930s and 1950s. A well-known character in the East End, she sat on a box on the pavement, often cursing customers (or potential customers) in Yiddish. A ceramic painted sculpture of her, the inspiration for this video, is part of the Jewish Museum London’s collection.
