Chanukah 2024

Although Chanukah is a relatively minor festival in the religious calendar, it is widely celebrated and enjoyed as a major cultural event across all strands of Judaism. Chanukah commemorates the recovery of Jerusalem and the rededication of the Second Temple at the start of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucids (Syrian-Greeks) in the 2nd century BCE.

Over the 8 days of Chanukah, Jews light chanukiah, as a reminder of how the Maccabees miraculously lit the Temple’s menorah for eight nights with only one day’s supply of oil. Jewish people also eat oily based food such as potato latkes and doughnuts, hold Hanukah parties, and play dreidl, a spinning toy game.

This December discover items a range of items and images focused on the festival of Chanukah in displays across three libraries throughout the borough of Enfield; Edmonton Green, Ordnance Unity Centre, and Palmers Green.
