Alec Silver was a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was killed on 7 March 1945 while loading wounded men on to an ambulance. He wrote this letter to his mother on the day of his death.

Alec was born in 1917, the son of Jacob and Sarah Silver of Clapton, and he worked as a tailor in Hackney. He was called up in 1941 and became a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Alec travelled widely and served in the Middle East, Italy and India. He landed in Normandy on D-Day and went on to serve in France and Belgium. He died just a few months before the end of the war.

Alec was one of over 60,000 Jewish men and women who served around the world in all branches of the British armed forces.
